The National Defence Academy (NDA) is a gateway for students who aspire to build a career in the Indian Armed Forces. Every year, thousands of candidates apply for the NDA exam to join the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Before starting preparation, it is essential to understand the NDA eligibility criteria, including age limit, educational qualification, and physical standards.

1. NDA Eligibility Criteria – Overview

The NDA exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) twice a year. Candidates must fulfill the following eligibility conditions:

  1. Nationality
  2. Age Limit and Marital Status
  3. Educational Qualification
  4. Physical and Medical Standards

2. Nationality

To apply for NDA, the candidate must satisfy one of the following conditions:

  1. The candidate must be a citizen of India, or
  2. A subject of Nepal, or
  3. A subject of Bhutan, or
  4. A Tibetan refugee who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of permanent settlement, or
  5. A person of Indian origin who has migrated from countries such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, and Ethiopia with the intention of settling permanently in India

Candidates belonging to categories other than Indian citizens must possess a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.


3. NDA Age Limit and Marital Status

The age criteria for NDA are strictly defined by UPSC.

  1. Minimum Age: 16.5 years
  2. Maximum Age: 19.5 years

Important conditions:

  1. The candidate must fall within the date of birth range specified in the official notification
  2. Only unmarried male and female candidates are eligible
  3. Candidates must remain unmarried during the entire training period

4. NDA Educational Qualification

The educational qualification varies depending on the wing of the Armed Forces.

4.1 For Army Wing

  1. Candidates must have passed Class 12 (10+2) from a recognized board
  2. Students from any stream (Science, Commerce, Arts) are eligible

4.2 For Navy and Air Force Wings

  1. Candidates must have passed Class 12 (10+2) from a recognized board
  2. Physics and Mathematics are compulsory subjects

4.3 For Appearing Candidates

  1. Students appearing in Class 12 can also apply
  2. They must submit proof of passing before joining NDA

5. NDA Height Eligibility

Height requirements vary based on service and gender.

  1. Army:
    • Male: Minimum 157 cm
    • Female: Minimum 152 cm
  2. Navy:
    • Male: Minimum 157 cm
    • Female: Minimum 152 cm
  3. Air Force:
    • Male: Minimum 162.5 cm
    • Female: Minimum 152 cm

Relaxations:

  1. Candidates from North-Eastern regions and Gorkhas: 5 cm relaxation
  2. Candidates from Lakshadweep: 2 cm relaxation

6. NDA Weight Eligibility

Weight should be proportionate to height as per the official standards.

  1. Candidates must maintain a balanced Body Mass Index (BMI)
  2. Both underweight and overweight candidates may be disqualified
  3. Example: For height 157 cm, weight should be approximately between 49–52 kg depending on age

7. NDA Physical Fitness Requirements

Candidates must be physically and mentally fit.

  1. No history of serious illness or mental breakdown
  2. No deformity such as scoliosis or spinal issues
  3. No flat feet or knock knees
  4. Chest should be well developed with minimum expansion of 5 cm
  5. Normal hearing ability
  6. Eyesight within prescribed limits

8. NDA Eyesight Standards

8.1 Army

  1. Better eye: 6/6
  2. Worse eye: 6/9
  3. Myopia: Not more than -2.5D
  4. Hypermetropia: Not more than +3.5D

8.2 Navy and Air Force

  1. Better eye: 6/6
  2. Worse eye: 6/6
  3. Myopia: Not more than -0.75D (Air Force)
  4. Hypermetropia: Not more than +1.5D (Air Force)

9. Physical Activities Recommended Before SSB

To prepare for physical tests, candidates should practice regularly:

  1. Running 2.4 km within 15 minutes
  2. Skipping and rope climbing
  3. Push-ups (minimum 20)
  4. Sit-ups (minimum 20)
  5. Chin-ups (minimum 8)
  6. Swimming (recommended but optional)

10. NDA Medical Test at SSB

Candidates who clear the written exam and SSB undergo a medical examination.

  1. Chest and spine X-ray
  2. Eye and ear examination
  3. Blood and urine tests
  4. Dental check-up
  5. Orthopedic assessment
